Ermoupoli Port sits in the capital of the Cyclades and the administrative centre of the entire South Aegean region, with 55 superyacht berths in the historic neoclassical harbour beneath the twin churches of Saint Nicholas (Orthodox) and Ano Syros (Catholic) — the island was founded in the 19th century as the principal shipping hub of post-independence Greece, and Ermoupoli is the only Greek town with a substantial neoclassical city centre. Syros remains the practical administrative and supply hub of the central Cyclades.
The Syrian pantry is Cycladic with distinctive local specialties. San Michalis cheese — a hard, sharp Syros sheep cheese with PDO status, found only on the island. Loukoumi (Turkish delight) of Syros — the island's specialty since the 19th century, distinctly aromatic with mastic and rosewater. Halvadopita, another Syrian sweet specialty. Cycladic specialties: tomatokeftedes (Santorini tomato fritters), fava (yellow split pea purée), capers and caper leaves, white aubergines. Greek wines: Assyrtiko from Santorini, Aegean indigenous wines. Olive oil from across Greece (Syros has limited own production). Fresh fish from the local boats. Yachting season runs May through October with sharp peaks July-August. Syros suppliers handle same-day on fresh items and 24 to 48 hours on full provisioning, plus onward delivery to the smaller Cyclades islands via the active inter-island shipping network.
